Marc Barreda (1977) was born in Peru and raised on a small farm in the United States. He received a bachelors degree in biology from Williams College in 1999. Since then he has been developing as an artist working intimately with traditional glassblowing techniques and kinetic installation. Marc has worked and taught around the world from the U.S. to Ecuador and eventually to Holland where he helped to develop the Vrij Glas Foundation. This experience provoked a strong connection to the Netherlands. In 2009 Marc moved to Amsterdam to begin a new education. After one year at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, he entered the Sandberg Institute where he is currently completing his Master Degree in the Applied Arts/Dirty Arts Department.
I studied Biology because of a fascination for the mechanisms that create and sustain life. However I found the scientific realm pushing so hard toward goal oriented pursuits that there appeared to be little interest in reflection and expansion of knowledge and theories in a broader context. I believe that art is founded on such an application of knowledge.
My work develops through a reciprocal relationship between scientific concepts and the drama of existence. Sourcing from one to examine or react on the other I use a broad range of materials and processes as I find greatest expressiveness and inspiration in the alchemy achieved from uniting the mind and the hand.
