ABOUT /

My father wanted me to be a doctor but early in my transition he told me that I was doing all the things he always wanted to do himself. I obtained a degree in Biology but left the Sciences to pursue a career in the Arts. I found myself on two different roads exploring materials, techniques and craft while developing conceptual and autonomous work. I’ve spent the last ten years traveling along this route. Training as a glassblower I worked for various artists, taught and did residencies around the world. Meanwhile my own practice as a sculptor led to a consistent showing schedule. After this time I settled in Amsterdam to pursue my Masters in Applied Arts at the Sandberg Institute. My endeavor to merge these two routes is manifesting in a much larger process of exploring my identity as an artist with roots in Peru, raising in the United States and realization in the Netherlands.

As a chemist distills liquids to isolate and understand their components, thus do I seek the essence of experience and interaction. Each moment in our lives is fused to the other with a special mortar, one that provides definition and guides significance. While essential to the whole, this substance is unique to each brick. It is this complex relationship between the entirety and the individual that I seek to understand. How can I capture a moment both microscopically and macroscopically? I conduct my explorations through observation and participation, collecting and reacting. What this gives me is a cacophony of materials, techniques, objects, memories and emotions that I pick and choose from to create my manifestations. Whether construction or deconstruction, abstraction or depiction the work remains centered around the essence but aims to keep all parts of the experience visible.
